So this is Christmas…

December 25, 2010

This Christmas has been extremely rewarding, not just because I got to see my friends and family but also because FUCK YEA, GIFTS!

I’m in such a good mood. Here’s why:

1) Guster’s new album Easy Wonderful! I love Guster; they’re my favorite band and they haven’t put out an album in four years so I was anticipating this for a long time. I’m listening to it right now and it’s making me so happy. Well worth the wait.

2) LOST Seasons 1 & 2! I started watching Lost with my friends at the start of the sixth season and fell in love with it. It instantly became my favorite TV show and I’ve always wanted to go back and watch Seasons 1-5. Now it begins… lucky I’ve got another three weeks of vacation to kill.

3) Inception DVD! Chris Nolan is my favorite director, and always was even before he made The Dark Knight. Inception was an incredible experience for me not only because of how amazingly stylish the movie was, but because of how many jokes came of it afterwards (BWAAAA to name one). I’m glad to have added this epic fragment of my future Nolan collection to the pile.

4) Avatar [DVD]! Even though my mom accidentally bought a Blu-Ray disc and didn’t realize that my Xbox 360 can’t play Blu-Ray movies (DUHHH MOM! CAN’T BELIEVE YOU DIDN’T KNOW THAT OMGGG) I was still happy to get this one. Some might knock Avatar saying it’s just eye candy, but I honestly loved everything about it. It was breathtaking; I remember my jaw dropping at every scene change. And now I have it fo’ eva. Except not in 3D. But that’s fine because my life is in 3D anyways and that shit gets old.

5) The Hangover DVD! One of the best comedies in recent history. Love it. “SHE’S A NICE LADY!”

6) Gift card to Tenchi Sushi! In an odd turn of events, a sushi restaurant opened up in Bellingham next to Walmart which I’ve been dying to try out. My only experience with sushi is from UMass dining, so I’m curious to try the real deal.

7) Other assorted gift cards for clothes, movie tickets, and fast food. Nothing says Merry Christmas like a gift card to Subway. NOTHING. No legit though, I’m looking forward to those free late-night munchies.

I suppose I should’ve said something about how my greatest gift was life and freedom and love, but FUCK THAT I GOT AWESOME GIFTS. FUCK YEA, CHRISTMAS.

June 21, 2010

I just finished my first day of training to be a server at the Outback Steakhouse in Bellingham. The Cowell Dynasty is now 3-strong.

My training consists of three initial classes and workshops in the restaurant, then four days of observation and training on the job. Today was my first class, and a manager spent an hour or two going into great detail about every item on the menu.

I never realized until today how large a variety of food and drinks there are at Outback. To become a server I need to memorize the whole menu, as well as the abbreviations for every individual item, and a description of how each is cooked or prepared. Not an easy task considering the food menu alone has about a hundred items, and I’ve never worked with food before so I don’t know what half of the spices and garnishes are.

I feel like studying for this menu test will be much like studying for a history exam, one where you have to memorize a hundred events, the people who took part in them, and then list their effects on society. That’s pretty harsh for someone like me; I was always terrible at memorizing things in history classes. But I’ll pull through. Here I come, index cards.

G’Day, Mate!

Good Eats

June 18, 2010

I’ve been asked what my favorite food is by different people in different scenarios, and I’ve never been very good at answering that question. Since I could never come up with just one, I’ve compiled a list of foods here that I particularly enjoy. I’ll most likely add to it later as I recall others.

In no particular order:

Birthday Cake – Note: It must be someone’s birthday to qualify as birthday cake. Otherwise it’s just cake, which isn’t as heavenly.

Cheeseburgers – Whether restaurant or fast-food style, any combination of beef and cheese will satisfy. Even better with bacon and ketchup.

Peanut Butter – I’m not sure how to describe why peanut butter is so fucking good. It’s perfect with chocolate, on toast, with fruit, or just by itself. Sooo good.

Wings Over Amherst – Specifically the Honey Barbeque wings, with a side of ranch dressing. Easily one of the best tastes I’ve ever encountered. Twice as nice with my friend mary jane.

Bananas – Tastes fantastic, comes in its own packaging, thwarts your enemies in Mario Kart. What more could you ask for in a healthy food?

Bacon – Best when crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside. If cooked just right a few strips of bacon could convince me to kidnap the president. This commercial puts it perfectly. And that brings us to…

Taco Bell – No menu item in particular, but at such low prices and such tasty burritos it reigns as my go-to source of cheap cuisine.

Cheesecake – Orgasm-in-my-mouth delicious ever single time, whether from a college dining hall or from the Cheesecake factory it never lets me down.

Puppies – Yum.
